Pastels are pure pigment held together with binder and rolled into sticks. They are not chalks! The brands I favor are Schminke, Sennelier, Rowney, Terry Ludwig and Unison. These are all soft pastels. I also use the harder Nupastels to lay down my initial drawing and later on to use as a blending tool. Pastel colors are so vibrant because of the purity of the pigments and are extremely durable and light resistant.

Many of my paintings are plein air studies averaging 9" x12" in size. Large pieces are usually painted in the studio with the use of my sketches and photos taken at the scene for reference.
